Caption: A bowhead is slaughtered and divided. A large bowhead may provide many tons of meat, which is shared traditionally with the entire community.

Description: A bowhead whale is being butchered by whalers, men and women alike out on the ice near an open lead. Man on top is using a tuggautaq {large flensing knife} to cut the maktak {skin and blubber} while men on the side pull using niksigaurat {meat hook}.
