NEW MAYOR. Whaling captain George Ahmaogak was sworn in as the new mayor of the North Slope Borough last week. Ahmaogak, the third person even elected to the mayor’s position and the fourth to actually serve, soundly defeated the incumbent, Eugene Brower with 843 votes against the latter’s 667. Candidates Joseph Yupickson [sic] and Donald Long received 129 and 63 votes respectively. an additional eight candidates vied for three seats on the seven-member borough assembly. Eileen Pnigeo Maclean was elected to replace Donald Long and George Agnasagga. Assemblywoman Flossie Hopson Andersen was re-elected to a second three-year term. the assembly also declared Leona Okakok as the winner of one of three school board seats. a run-off election will be held on November 6 between Jana Harcharek of Barrow, David Bodfish of Wainwright, Joseph Kaleak and Archie Brower of Kaktovik, all of whom received less than the required forty percent of the cast ballots needed for victory.
